Pool Parties
How do we choose the right activities for our community?

Start with who actually uses your pool: young families, teens, adults, or seniors. A quick survey or a look at attendance patterns shows what to offer. Mix a few easy events with one or two signature programs, so each group has a reason to visit.

How do pool activities help increase usage and memberships?

Planned events give people a reason to come on days they normally would not, and shared activities turn neighbors into a community. Members who feel connected tend to renew and to invite friends, which is how programming supports both memberships and daily attendance.

How do we keep pool games safe?
  • Keep games away from lap swimming and deep water
  • Explain the rules before each game starts
  • Ban breath-holding contests and rough play
  • Keep lifeguards focused on the water while activity staff run the game
How do we schedule activities so every age group gets a turn?
  • Kids’ games and contests in the morning or early afternoon
  • Teen events in the evening
  • Aqua fitness for adults and seniors at quieter hours
  • Family days on weekends
Who runs the activities, and does it take our lifeguards away from the water?

Activity staff and lifeguards should have separate roles. Lifeguards stay focused on watching the water, while activity leaders handle games, prizes, and crowd flow. This keeps events fun without splitting anyone’s attention.

How can local businesses sponsor our pool events?
  • Banners or signs at the event
  • Business name on flyers and social posts
  • Prize donations with a shout-out
  • Booths or free samples from family-friendly businesses
How do we get more people to show up to events?

Announce events early with a printed calendar at the pool, then repeat through email, text, and social posts. Partner with schools, clubs, and local businesses to reach families who do not already visit, and remind people a day or two before each event.

What should we plan for a dive-in movie or evening event?
  • Keep the screen and speakers away from the water’s edge
  • Turn on pool lighting and keep the deck well lit
  • Keep lifeguards on duty for the whole event
  • Set a swimmer limit and clear seating areas
What if bad weather or low turnout affects a planned event?

Choose a rain date when you schedule the event and announce it upfront. If weather closes the pool or turnout is low, have a smaller deck-based version ready, and post changes early so guests do not travel for nothing.

Can non-swimmers take part in pool games?
  • Offer shallow-water or deck versions of games
  • Ask children to complete the swim test first
  • Provide Coast Guard approved life jackets for those who need them
  • Never pressure anyone to enter deeper water
